Why this applies to Cariprazine Hydrochloride

Cariprazine Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hops interacts with.

Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down cariprazine (Vraylar). Hops might nudge that enzyme to work a little faster, which in theory could lower your cariprazine levels and make it slightly less effective. With an antipsychotic, you'd be watching for symptoms creeping back, like mood changes or returning thoughts that the medicine usually keeps in check.

The good news is this is mostly a lab and animal idea. In a real human study, a similar hops extract changed levels of a test drug by under 8 percent, which isn't enough to matter. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Cariprazine itself is long-acting and can cause drowsiness, and hops can too, so just be mindful of feeling extra sleepy. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Cariprazine Used For?

Brand name: Vraylar

Vraylar (cariprazine) is approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and teens 13 and older, and to treat acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and children 10 and older. In adults, it is also approved for depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression).

Additionally, Vraylar is approved as an add-on therapy alongside antidepressants for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) who need extra help beyond their current antidepressant alone.
