Hops + Ibuprofen, Oxycodone
Ibuprofen, Oxycodone brand name: Combunox.
Ibuprofen, Oxycodone falls into 2 drug categories that Hops can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use of hops with sedative drugs might cause additive sedation.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Hops interacts with whole categories of medication. Ibuprofen, Oxycodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hops in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Oxycodone
Ibuprofen, Oxycodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Hops interacts with.
Some animal research shows that hops has sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The thing to watch here is the oxycodone half of this combo pill (Combunox pairs oxycodone with ibuprofen). Oxycodone is an opioid that already makes many people feel drowsy, foggy, or lightheaded. Hops are used for sleep and may have a mild calming effect of their own, so taking them together could stack that drowsiness and leave you more sedated than you expect.
I want to be honest about how solid this is: it's mostly theoretical, based on how hops behave plus some animal studies, not strong human proof. Still, with an opioid on board, I'd play it safe. Watch for extra sleepiness or trouble concentrating, avoid driving until you know how you react, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Ibuprofen, Oxycodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
This combination pill pairs ibuprofen with oxycodone, a strong opioid painkiller. The oxycodone part is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab and animal studies hint that hops might gently speed up that enzyme, which in theory could clear oxycodone a little faster and slightly soften its pain relief. The ibuprofen side isn't really affected here.
Honestly, the evidence is thin and only theoretical. A human study showed hops changed a similar drug's level by under 8 percent, which is too small to notice. The bigger real-world concern is simpler: both hops and oxycodone can make you drowsy, so together you may feel extra sleepy. Run any new supplement by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibuprofen, Oxycodone page
“Combunox puts oxycodone, an opioid, together with the NSAID ibuprofen, and I want you to read this page carefully rather than skim it. Of the 356 supplements and herbs on file, 202 can raise your bleeding risk on top of what ibuprofen already does, and 78 can deepen the drowsiness and slowed breathing that come with oxycodone.”

About Hops
What is Hops?
- Sleep problems and insomnia
- Anxiety and restlessness
- Menopausal symptoms
- Mild digestive complaints
- Flavoring in beer and food
Hops are most often used for sleep and mild anxiety, frequently combined with valerian, but the human evidence is limited and not very strong. They are generally well tolerated when used short-term, though they may cause drowsiness, and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding because their safety is unknown.
