Here's the simple version. Your water pill, the amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide combo, already lowers your blood pressure. In test-tube and animal studies, horny goat weed also seems to nudge blood pressure downward. Stack the two together and, in theory, your pressure could dip a little lower than expected.

What that might feel like is dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, tiredness, or a fluttery feeling. I want to be honest with you though: this combined effect has only been seen in the lab, not in actual people, so it's more of a heads-up than a red alert. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding this herb, especially since you're being treated for blood pressure or heart issues.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
