Here's the gist: reserpine already lowers your blood pressure by calming your nervous system and relaxing your blood vessels. The concern with horny goat weed is that, at least in lab and animal studies, it also seems to nudge blood pressure downward. Stack the two together and the worry is that your pressure could dip a little too low.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or wobbly when standing up. I want to be honest, though: this lowering effect has only been seen in the lab, not reported in real people, so it stays theoretical for now. Still, since reserpine is a serious blood pressure medicine, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Reserpine Used For?

  • Reserpine is used to treat high blood pressure. It also is used to treat severe agitation in patients with mental disorders. Reserpine is in a class of medications called rauwolfia alkaloids. It works by slowing the activity of the nervous system, causing the heartbeat to slow and the blood vessels to relax.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
