Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Brovana (arformoterol) is a long-acting beta agonist you breathe in to keep your airways open in COPD. Like other drugs in its class, it can give your heart a little extra push. Guayusa tea carries caffeine, which is also a mild stimulant. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could feel that stimulation add up.

What that might look like in real life is a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, shakiness, or trouble settling down. I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds work rather than on solid studies, and a normal cup or two of tea likely won't cause trouble. Large, concentrated amounts are the bigger worry. If you have any heart history, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Arformoterol page

“Arformoterol (Brovana) is an inhaled beta-agonist that opens airways in COPD, and because it also stimulates the heart, its 32 supplement and herbal interactions warrant real vigilance rather than a quick skim. Most of the moderate entries are caffeine sources (coffee, teas, energy-drink botanicals) that can amplify the drug's heart-st…”

About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
