Black Tea and Arformoterol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS

Why this applies to Arformoterol

Arformoterol falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Black Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of black tea might increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Black tea contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: arformoterol (Brovana) is a long-acting medicine you breathe in to keep your airways open with COPD. Like other beta-agonists, it can gently rev up the heart, sometimes causing a faster heartbeat, palpitations, or a jittery feeling. The caffeine in black tea can nudge the heart in the same direction, so combining a lot of strong tea with your inhaler could, in theory, add up to a bit more of that effect.

This concern is theoretical and based on how the two work, not on solid studies. A normal cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause trouble for most people. If you drink a lot, or you notice a racing or pounding heart, jitters, or trouble sleeping, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Arformoterol page

“Arformoterol (Brovana) is an inhaled beta-agonist that opens airways in COPD, and because it also stimulates the heart, its 32 supplement and herbal interactions warrant real vigilance rather than a quick skim. Most of the moderate entries are caffeine sources (coffee, teas, energy-drink botanicals) that can amplify the drug's heart-st…”
