Trimipramine falls under TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS (TCAs) — the group Black Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, TCAs might bind with black tea constituents when taken at the same time.
In vitro research suggests that the tannins in black tea might cause precipitation of TCAs. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version for trimipramine (Surmontil) and black tea. The concern isn't about how your liver processes the medicine. It's about what can happen right in your stomach. Black tea contains compounds called tannins, and lab studies suggest these tannins can bind to tricyclic antidepressants like trimipramine and cause them to clump together. In theory, that could mean a little less of your dose actually gets absorbed, which might slightly weaken its benefit.

The good news: this has only been seen in test-tube studies, never reported in real people, and it's rated as a minor interaction. If you want to play it safe, just separate your tea and your trimipramine by a couple of hours. As always, check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Brand names: Surmontil, Trimip, Rhotrimine, Tripramine, Trimp

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
