Black Tea and Modafinil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Modafinil

Modafinil falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Black Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Black tea contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both modafinil and the caffeine in black tea are stimulants, so drinking them together can pile their effects on top of each other. Modafinil is already a wakefulness promoter, and adding a caffeine boost can make the usual stimulant side effects more noticeable. Think jitteriness, a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble winding down to sleep, headaches, or feeling on edge.

This is a theoretical, common-sense concern rather than something proven in studies, so I wouldn't panic over a normal cup or two. If you find yourself feeling wired or your heart is fluttering, that's your cue to ease back on the tea. Anyone with heart or blood pressure issues, or who is sensitive to caffeine, should check with their pharmacist or doctor before combining them regularly.

About Black Tea

What is Black Tea?

  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health support
  • Blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Digestive complaints
  • Weight management
  • Antioxidant support

Black tea is a popular caffeinated drink made from the fully oxidized leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, and it contains caffeine and antioxidant plant compounds. Moderate tea drinking is generally safe for most adults and may modestly support heart health and alertness, but it is not a proven treatment for any disease. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, sensitive to caffeine, or taking medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Modafinil

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
