Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of both caffeine and riluzole.
Black tea contains caffeine. Caffeine and riluzole are both metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2), and concomitant use might reduce metabolism of one or both agents.

Here's the gist: both the caffeine in black tea and your riluzole are cleared by the same liver enzyme, called CYP1A2. Because they compete for that same pathway, drinking a lot of tea could slow how fast each one is broken down, letting levels of both creep up a bit. For riluzole, higher levels might mean more of its usual side effects, things like dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, or feeling weak or lightheaded. You may also notice the caffeine hitting harder, with jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, or trouble sleeping.

I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes from lab studies, not strong human data, so it's more theoretical than proven. A cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause trouble, but if you drink a lot daily, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
