Ilex Guayusa and Dalteparin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.

Theoretically, Ilex guayusa may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, caffeine in Ilex guayusa might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner that lowers your blood's ability to clot. The thinking here is that the caffeine in guayusa may have a mild blood-thinning effect of its own, so combining the two could add up and slightly raise your chance of bruising or bleeding.

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on how caffeine behaves in the lab, not something that's actually been seen in people taking dalteparin. Ordinary tea-sized amounts of guayusa are unlikely to cause trouble. Still, keep an eye out for unusual bruising, nosebleeds, pink urine, or bleeding that won't stop, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before drinking it regularly.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalteparin page

“Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots, which is exactly why this list warrants real vigilance, and nearly all 218 ingredients on it thin the blood too. They are herbs and extracts with clot-inhibiting or antiplatelet effects of their own, so stacking them on dalteparin can push bl…”

About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin is used to prevent clot-related problems in several situations. These include unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack (taken with aspirin), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip or abdominal surgery or during an acute illness that severely limits movement.

It is also used to treat symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE, a clot in a vein) and lower the chance it comes back. This applies to adults with cancer and to children from birth (gestational age at least 35 weeks). Fragmin is not indicated for the acute treatment of VTE.
