Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the key thing to know: this interaction works in the opposite direction from what you might expect. It's not that guayusa changes your hormones. Instead, the estrogen part of Divitren (estradiol) can slow down how your body clears caffeine, and guayusa is essentially a caffeine source, much like yerba mate or green tea.

So when you sip guayusa while taking this medication, the caffeine may linger longer and hit a little harder than usual. That can mean more jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious or wired. The fix is simple and in your hands: you don't need to give it up, but go easier on it and notice how you feel. If the caffeine effects bother you, chat with your pharmacist about cutting back.

About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
