These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Ilex Guayusa interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ilex Guayusa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel
Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Oral contraceptives decrease the rate of caffeine clearance by 40% to 65%.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's a fun twist on this one: it isn't your birth control pill (Lybrel) that gets affected, it's the caffeine in guayusa. Birth control pills like this one slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly 40% to 65%. So the same cup of guayusa can stick around longer and hit harder than it would for someone not on the pill.
In real life, that can mean more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble falling asleep, or feeling on edge, especially if you're already a heavy caffeine drinker. Your contraception still works the same and stays effective. If guayusa leaves you wired, just ease up on the amount. As always, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have any heart concerns.

ESTROGENS
2 of 2Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel also falls under ESTROGENS.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Estrogen inhibits caffeine metabolism.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know about pairing your guayusa tea with Lybrel (a birth control pill that combines ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel). The interaction actually runs in the opposite direction from what most people expect. The estrogen in your pill slows down how your body clears caffeine. So it's not that the guayusa changes your birth control, it's that the pill makes the caffeine from guayusa stick around longer and hit harder.
In real life, that can mean more jitteriness, a faster or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious and wired, especially if you drink several cups. You don't have to give it up, but consider going easy and spreading it out. If your heart races or you feel off, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Ilex Guayusa
What is Ilex Guayusa?
- Energy and alertness
- Mental focus
- Antioxidant support
- Appetite control
- Athletic and physical performance
Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
