Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: pentobarbital is a barbiturate, and one of its main jobs is to calm you down and help you sleep. Guayusa, on the other hand, is basically a caffeine drink, and caffeine is a stimulant that does the opposite. So when you sip guayusa, the alertness it brings can work against pentobarbital's sleepy, sedating effect, potentially making the medication feel like it isn't working as well.

This isn't about guayusa changing how your body breaks the drug down. It's more of a tug-of-war between a calming drug and a stimulant. The concern here is mostly theoretical and based on limited evidence, so don't panic. Still, if pentobarbital was prescribed to help you sleep or settle down, it's worth mentioning your guayusa habit to your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pentobarbitone page

“Pentobarbitone is a barbiturate, one of the older and heavier sedatives, and the gap between a dose that helps sleep and one that slows breathing too far is not a generous one. That is why I read this particular list with genuine concern.”

About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
