Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Theobromine
Theobromine falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: both guayusa and theobromine can nudge your potassium a little lower. Guayusa brings caffeine, and caffeine in large amounts can push potassium into your cells, which lowers the level floating in your blood. Theobromine acts much like caffeine and has a mild water-pill (diuretic) effect, so it can do the same thing. Stacking the two together is what raises the concern.
I want to be honest about how strong this is: it's theoretical, based on how these compounds work rather than solid human studies. A normal cup or two of guayusa tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplement doses or heavy daily use are where it matters more. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you take other diuretics.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Theobromine page
“Theobromine, the caffeine cousin found in chocolate and used medically as a mild diuretic and blood vessel relaxer, deserves real care around supplements. Most of the trouble runs through its diuretic action: dozens of herbs, from aloe latex to apple cider vinegar, either add their own fluid-losing effect or drain potassium, and togeth…”

About Ilex Guayusa
What is Ilex Guayusa?
- Energy and alertness
- Mental focus
- Antioxidant support
- Appetite control
- Athletic and physical performance
Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
