Theoretically, Ilex guayusa might increase the levels and adverse effects of tiagabine.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that chronic caffeine administration can increase the serum concentrations of tiagabine. However, concomitant use does not seem to reduce the antiepileptic effects of tiagabine.

Here's the gist with guayusa and your tiagabine. Guayusa is basically a caffeine-rich tea, and the only concern on file is a theoretical one: in animal studies, regular caffeine intake nudged tiagabine levels up a bit. If that carried over to people, it could mean slightly stronger drug effects, things like more drowsiness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, or feeling unsteady.

I want to be honest that this is weak evidence from lab and animal work, not human studies, and it's rated minor. Importantly, the caffeine did not appear to weaken seizure control. A cup now and then likely won't cause trouble, but heavy daily use is worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, especially since seizure meds need steady levels.

What Is Tiagabine Used For?

Brand name: Gabitril

Tiagabine hydrochloride tablets are approved as add-on (adjunctive) therapy for partial seizures in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is not used alone — it is always added to an existing seizure medication regimen.

Both the film-coated and standard tablet forms of tiagabine hydrochloride carry this same indication. The safety and effectiveness of tiagabine have not been established for any other condition.
