Ip-6 and Bivalirudin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Bivalirudin

Bivalirudin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ip-6 interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of IP-6 with drugs that affect platelet aggregation may increase the risk of bleeding. In vitro IP-6 can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been demonstrated in humans.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with IP-6 and bivalirudin (Angiomax). Bivalirudin is a powerful blood thinner given through an IV, usually in a hospital during heart procedures like angioplasty. It directly blocks thrombin to stop clots from forming. On its own, its main risk is bleeding, from easy bruising to more serious bleeding at the catheter site.

In lab dishes, IP-6 has shown it can make platelets a little less sticky. The thinking is that pairing it with a blood thinner could, in theory, add to bleeding risk. But here's the honest part: this has never been shown in actual people, and it's based only on test-tube studies. Since bivalirudin is given in a closely monitored hospital setting, just mention any supplements you take to your care team.

  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bivalirudin page

“Bivalirudin (Angiomax) is a strong intravenous blood thinner used during heart procedures like angioplasty, and because bleeding is already its main built-in danger, this list deserves genuine care. All 202 supplements on it interact the same basic way: they thin the blood or blunt platelets themselves, stacking bleeding risk on top of…”

About Ip-6

What is Ip-6?

  • Antioxidant support
  • Cancer prevention interest
  • Kidney stone prevention
  • Heart and immune support
  • Reducing excess iron

IP-6 (inositol hexaphosphate, also called phytic acid or phytate) is a natural compound found in high-fiber plant foods and sold as a supplement, often paired with inositol. It is most studied as an antioxidant and mineral binder, but human evidence for its popular uses—such as cancer prevention—is limited and not conclusive. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have low mineral levels or a chronic condition.
