Here's the gist with metformin and kombucha: this is a theoretical interaction, meaning it's based on how kombucha behaves in animal studies, not solid human proof. In those studies, kombucha nudged blood sugar a little lower on its own. Since metformin is already working to bring your sugar down, the worry is that the two together could push your blood sugar lower than expected.

Metformin by itself rarely causes low blood sugar, so this is a mild, possible concern rather than something alarming. Still, watch for signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy, especially if you drink kombucha regularly. An occasional glass is unlikely to cause trouble. If you enjoy it daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your readings.

Metformin hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are approved for adults and children 10 years and older. Metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets — including brands such as Fortamet, Glumetza, and Metformin Hydrochloride Extended Release — are approved for adults only.
