Let me put you at ease here. The interaction on file is about licorice possibly speeding up a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which could lower how much of a drug your body absorbs. But the version of betamethasone you're asking about, Luxiq, is a foam you rub onto your skin or scalp. It works right where you apply it to calm itching, redness, and scaling, so it isn't really relying on gut absorption the way a swallowed pill would.

On top of that, this concern comes only from lab and test-tube research, not from real people, so it's very theoretical. Practically speaking, taking licorice tea or supplements is unlikely to change how well your skin cream works. If you ever use it on large areas or for a long time, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, concomitant use of licorice and corticosteroids might increase the side effects of corticosteroids.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of licorice and oral corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone, can potentiate the duration of activity and increase blood levels of corticosteroids. Additionally, in one case report, a patient with neurogenic orthostatic hypertension stabilized on fludrocortisone 0.1 mg twice daily developed pseudohyperaldosteronism after recent consumption of large amounts of black licorice.

Here's the good news first: this interaction is mostly described with steroids taken by mouth, and your Luxiq is a topical betamethasone you apply to the skin. Only small amounts of a topical steroid normally get into your bloodstream, so the concern is much lower than with a steroid pill.

The idea behind the warning is that licorice (specifically the glycyrrhizin in regular, non-DGL products) slows down how your body clears corticosteroids, which can make steroid levels and effects linger a bit longer. In theory that could nudge up steroid side effects, plus licorice on its own can raise blood pressure and drop potassium. This is based only on anecdotal reports, so it's far from certain. If you use a lot of licorice or apply your cream over large or broken areas for a long time, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first.

What Is Betamethasone Topical Used For?

Brand name: Luxiq

Betamethasone topical is used to relieve the redness, swelling, and itching of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses (skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment). Sernivo Spray is specifically approved for plaque psoriasis of the body. Diprolene (topical cream, ointment, or gel) is indicated for inflammatory and itchy skin conditions in patients 13 years of age and older.

This medication is for use on the skin only. It is not approved for use on the face, groin, or underarms, and it is not for use in the eyes, mouth, or vagina.
