Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this combo. Alogliptin (Nesina) already works to lower your blood sugar by helping your body release more of its own insulin. Lion's mane has been shown in animal studies to nudge blood sugar down and insulin up too. So in theory, stacking the two could add up and pull your sugar lower than expected.

If that happens, you might notice signs of low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling foggy and irritable. The good news is this is only a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, not strong human proof. Still, it's smart to keep an eye on your readings and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adding lion's mane.
