Lion's Mane Mushroom and Golimumab

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Golimumab

Golimumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Lion's Mane Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use of lion's mane mushroom might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
In animal and in vitro research, lion's mane mushroom polysaccharides stimulate the immune system.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea with Simponi (golimumab). This is a biologic that works by calming down an overactive immune system, specifically by blocking a signal called TNF. That's how it eases the joint pain and swelling in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

Now, lion's mane seems to do the opposite in a way. In lab dishes and animal studies, its mushroom sugars (polysaccharides) appear to rev the immune system up. In theory, that could push back against what golimumab is trying to do and weaken your symptom control. I want to be honest though: this is only theoretical and based on early lab and animal work, not real patients, so it may not matter much in practice. Still, it's worth running by your doctor or pharmacist before you start it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Golimumab page

“Echinacea is the entry I would flag first, since it is the immune booster people reach for at the first sniffle, and immune stimulation is exactly what golimumab (Simponi Aria) is designed to dial down.
