Lion's Mane Mushroom and Insulin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin

Insulin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Lion's Mane Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, lion's mane mushroom may have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that an aqueous extract of lion's mane mushroom can reduce serum glucose and increase serum insulin.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: insulin already lowers your blood sugar, and in animal studies lion's mane appeared to nudge blood sugar down too. So the worry is an additive effect, meaning the two together could push your sugar lower than insulin alone. With your NovoRapid, that could show up as hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or feeling lightheaded).

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's theoretical and based mostly on lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so for most people the real-world effect is likely small. If you'd like to try lion's mane, keep checking your sugars a bit more closely at first and loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting. Don't change your insulin dose on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin page

“Someone injecting insulin (NovoRapid) is often the same person browsing supplements sold for blood sugar support, which is exactly why this list warrants genuine caution. Nearly all 242 entries push glucose one way or the other, most often further down, stacking with insulin and raising the risk of hypoglycemia, meaning dangerously low…”

Lion's mane is an edible mushroom that is popular as a 'nootropic' for memory, focus, and nerve health, but solid human evidence is still limited and early. It is generally well tolerated as a food and supplement, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have allergies.
