Durvalumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's something worth a quick conversation with your oncology team. The interaction on file says that, in animal studies, certain compounds in mace may quiet down the immune system. That sounds like it would just add to Durvalumab (Imfinzi), but it actually works against how this drug is supposed to behave. Durvalumab is an immunotherapy that revs your immune system up to attack cancer cells, so anything that calms immune activity could, in theory, blunt the very effect you want.

To be clear, this is purely theoretical and based on lab and animal data, not human studies, so I don't want you to lose sleep over it. Everyday cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to matter. Before using concentrated mace supplements during your treatment, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

About Durvalumab Injection

What Is Durvalumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Imfinzi

Imfinzi is used to treat a wide range of cancers in adults. For lung cancer, it is approved for resectable non-small cell lung cancer (given before and after surgery), unresectable Stage III non-small cell lung cancer (after chemoradiation), metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, limited-stage small cell lung cancer (after chemoradiation), and extensive-stage small cell lung cancer.

Beyond lung cancer, Imfinzi is also approved for locally advanced or metastatic biliary tract cancer (cancers of the bile ducts and gallbladder), unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer, BCG-naive high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and resectable gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma (stomach cancer at the junction with the esophagus). Most of these uses involve Imfinzi given alongside other chemotherapy drugs.
