Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Gliclazide is a sulfonylurea, which means its whole job is to push your pancreas to release more insulin and bring blood sugar down. Maitake mushroom may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own, so taking the two together could add up and push your glucose lower than you want. The concern here is hypoglycemia, with signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, hunger, or confusion.

To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and based on limited research, so I don't want to overstate it. Eating maitake as food is unlikely to cause trouble, but concentrated supplements are a different story. Please don't stop either one on your own. Just let your pharmacist or doctor know, and keep an eye on your home glucose readings if you add it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Gliclazide page

“Gliclazide (Diamicron) lowers blood sugar on its own, so a supplement list this long deserves real respect. Most of the entries are herbs and nutrients that also drop glucose, fenugreek, bitter melon, and ginseng among them, and stacking them on top can tip you into hypoglycemia, meaning blood sugar low enough to cause shakiness, sweat…”

About Maitake Mushroom

What is Maitake Mushroom?

Maitake Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar support in diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • General wellness and antioxidant support

Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
