Maitake Mushroom and Muraglitazar

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Muraglitazar

Muraglitazar falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Maitake Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Muraglitazar is a blood sugar lowering medicine, so the thing to watch here is your sugar dropping too low. Maitake doesn't change how your body breaks this drug down. Instead, the mushroom itself may nudge blood sugar lower, and some small studies suggest its polysaccharides can do that in people with type 2 diabetes. Stack that on top of a glucose lowering medication and the two effects can add up.

If your sugar runs too low, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or confused. This is a theoretical, fairly mild concern, and a serving of cooked mushroom is unlikely to matter much. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Muraglitazar page

“I read this list with genuine care, because muraglitazar (Pargluva) lowers blood sugar to treat type 2 diabetes, and 239 of the 256 supplements here can push that same lever. Most add to its effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia, meaning blood sugar dropping too low; a smaller share, niacin among them, push sugar up instead.”

About Maitake Mushroom

What is Maitake Mushroom?

Maitake Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar support in diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • General wellness and antioxidant support

Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
