Manna and Hydrochlorothiazide, Losartan Potassium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Losartan Potassium

Hydrochlorothiazide, Losartan Potassium falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Manna interacts with.

Theoretically, manna might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Manna contains mannitol, which acts as an osmotic laxative. Overuse of manna might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss, increasing the risk of hypokalemia.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Hyzaar (a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and losartan). The hydrochlorothiazide piece is a water pill that already makes you lose some potassium through your urine. Manna works as a gentle laxative, and if you overdo it, the extra fluid loss through your stool could add to that potassium drop. Too little potassium (called hypokalemia) can cause muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not something proven in solid studies. The losartan part actually tends to hold onto potassium a bit, which helps balance things. Occasional, normal use of manna is unlikely to cause trouble, but heavy or daily use could. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Manna
  • Gentle constipation relief
  • Mild laxative for children and elderly
  • Natural sweetener
  • Occasional bowel softening

Manna is the dried, sweet sap of the flowering ash tree (Fraxinus ornus) and is best known as a gentle, mild laxative because it contains a sugar alcohol called mannitol. It is generally considered mild and is sometimes used for occasional constipation, but high-quality modern studies are limited, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
