Sodium Nitroprusside falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. Theoretically, phellodendron might also reduce blood pressure.

Here's the thing to know: sodium nitroprusside (Nipride RTU) is a very powerful blood pressure lowering drug given by IV drip, almost always in a hospital or ICU where your blood pressure is watched minute by minute. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and small human studies suggest may gently lower blood pressure on its own.

So the concern is simple math: two things that drop blood pressure could add together, possibly leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, or pressure that falls too low. That said, this is a theoretical interaction based on how these work, not strong proof. In practice, nitroprusside is carefully dose-adjusted by your care team, so this rarely becomes a real problem. Still, tell your doctor or pharmacist about any supplements you take.
