Pomegranate + Olanzapine
Olanzapine brand name: Zyprexa.
Pomegranate has a moderate interaction with Olanzapine. Theoretically, pomegranate might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Olanzapine
Olanzapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Pomegranate interacts with.
In vitro, pomegranate juice inhibits CYP2D6. However, the clinical significance of this potential interaction in humans is not known.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version on pairing pomegranate with olanzapine. Your body partly relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this medication down. In lab dish studies, pomegranate juice appeared to slow that enzyme. If that happened in real life, olanzapine could build up a bit, which might mean stronger effects like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling more sluggish than usual.
The important catch: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not proven in people, and olanzapine actually leans more on a different enzyme (CYP1A2) anyway. So enjoying pomegranate as a fruit or normal juice is very unlikely to cause trouble. Just check with your pharmacist before using concentrated pomegranate extracts.

About Pomegranate
What is Pomegranate?
- Heart and blood vessel health
- Antioxidant support
- High blood pressure
- Inflammation
- Digestive upset
- Skin health
Pomegranate is a nutrient-rich fruit that is high in antioxidants and is widely enjoyed as food and juice. Early research suggests it may support heart health and blood pressure, but the evidence is still limited and not strong enough to call it a proven treatment. As a food it is generally safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take medications.
About Olanzapine
What Is Olanzapine Used For?
Brand name: Zyprexa
Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and the manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in both adults and adolescents (ages 13–17). It can also be used alongside valproate or lithium to treat manic or mixed episodes in adults. When combined with fluoxetine, olanzapine tablets and orally disintegrating tablets are used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression in adults.
Olanzapine intramuscular injection (short-acting) is used by healthcare providers to quickly calm acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I mania. Zyprexa Relprevv — a separate, long-acting intramuscular formulation available only through a restricted program — is indicated specifically for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.
