Meropenem falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Probiotics interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antibiotic drugs with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Many probiotics are bacteria. Since these preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of sensitive organisms. Human research shows that taking probiotic concurrently with antibiotic treatment does not affect the diversity of the gut microbiome compared with antibiotic treatment in the absence of probiotics. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and these preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the simple version: meropenem is a powerful antibiotic that kills bacteria, and a lot of probiotics are bacteria. So if you swallow your probiotic right when meropenem is active in your system, the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those live organisms before they can do anything helpful. The concern runs one way here, the antibiotic blunts the probiotic, not the other way around. Your meropenem will still work fine to treat your infection.

This is mostly a theoretical, common-sense concern rather than something proven to cause harm. Note that meropenem is given by IV, so timing is a bit different. A practical tip is to space your probiotic a couple of hours apart from doses, and check with your pharmacist or doctor about what fits your situation.

What Is Meropenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Merrem IV

Meropenem for injection is used intravenously to treat three serious types of bacterial infection: complicated skin and skin structure infections (in adults and children 3 months and older), complicated intra-abdominal infections such as appendicitis and peritonitis (in adults and children of all ages), and bacterial meningitis (in children 3 months and older only).

It works against a range of specific bacteria. Your doctor will choose it based on which bacteria are causing — or are strongly suspected of causing — your infection. Using it only when truly needed helps prevent antibiotic resistance.
