Rauwolscine and Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Rauwolscine interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Rauwolscine in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine

Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Rauwolscine interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rauwolscine with seizure threshold lowering drugs might increase the risk of adverse convulsant effects.
In animal research, intraperitoneal rauwolscine lowered the seizure threshold level of the drug metrazol.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

NyQuil is a combo product, and a couple of its ingredients can nudge the brain toward being more excitable. Both dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant) and high doses of the antihistamine doxylamine have, on rare occasions, been linked to lowering the seizure threshold. Rauwolscine, a yohimbine-like stimulant, may do the same thing. The concern is that stacking them could theoretically make a seizure a bit more likely, especially at large or repeated doses.

I want to be honest with you: this is based only on animal lab data, so it's a theoretical caution, not something proven in people. Still, rauwolscine can also spike your heart rate and blood pressure, which the pseudoephedrine in NyQuil already does. Please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, rauwolscine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Rauwolscine is structurally related to yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

NyQuil is a combo product, and one of its ingredients, dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant), is cleared by an enzyme called CYP2D6. Rauwolscine is a cousin of yohimbine, and in lab studies yohimbine appears to slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let dextromethorphan build up a bit more than usual, which may mean more dizziness, drowsiness, or, at higher levels, feeling spacey or restless.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based only on test-tube data, so we don't have real-world cases proving it happens in people. Still, rauwolscine on its own is a stimulant that can bump up heart rate and blood pressure, which doesn't mix nicely with NyQuil's sedating effects. Please run this combo by your pharmacist before pairing them.

STIMULANT DRUGS

3 of 3

Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking rauwolscine with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse stimulant effects.
Rauwolscine has demonstrated stimulant effects in animal research.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

The piece of NyQuil to watch here is the pseudoephedrine, which is itself a stimulant decongestant. Rauwolscine also acts as a stimulant by ramping up norepinephrine, your body's natural "go" chemical. Stack the two and you may stack their effects, so you could notice a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious. The doxylamine in NyQuil can muddy this further, since it normally makes you drowsy.

To be fair, this concern comes mostly from animal and lab research, not solid human studies, so it is more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, if you have heart issues, high blood pressure, or anxiety, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

  • Fat loss and weight management
  • Bodybuilding and physique support
  • Energy and stimulant effects
  • Athletic performance
  • Libido support

Rauwolscine (alpha-yohimbine) is a stimulant alkaloid closely related to yohimbine that is marketed mainly in fat-burning and pre-workout supplements. Human evidence for its benefits is very limited, and it can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause anxiety, so it should be used with caution and is not recommended for people with heart conditions, anxiety, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
