Rauwolscine and Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Rauwolscine interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rauwolscine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine

Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rauwolscine interacts with.

Theoretically, rauwolscine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Rauwolscine is structurally related to yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

This combo cold-and-flu product has three active ingredients, and the one that matters here is dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant. Your body clears it using an enzyme called CYP2D6. Rauwolscine is a cousin of yohimbine, and lab tests suggest yohimbine can slow this same enzyme down. If that happens in people too, dextromethorphan could build up a bit, leading to more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling spacey or restless.

Keep in mind this is theoretical, based only on test-tube data, so the real-world risk is probably small. Still, rauwolscine and the pseudoephedrine in this product are both stimulants, so together they may bump up your heart rate, blood pressure, and jitteriness. If you have heart issues or anxiety, check with your pharmacist before mixing them.

The piece of this combo product I'd focus on is the pseudoephedrine, the decongestant. It's already a stimulant that can nudge up your heart rate and blood pressure. Rauwolscine works through a different path (it blocks alpha-2 receptors and can raise norepinephrine), so stacking the two could pile stimulant on top of stimulant.

Realistically, that might mean a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, or higher blood pressure. I'll be straight with you: this concern comes from animal and lab data, not solid human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. The acetaminophen and dextromethorphan parts aren't the issue here. Still, if you have any heart or anxiety concerns, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
