Here's the gist: rauwolscine is a stimulant that can make the brain a little more 'excitable,' which in theory may lower the threshold for a seizure. Mexiletine, while mainly a heart-rhythm drug, can itself rarely trigger seizures or tremors at higher levels. Stacking the two together could, in theory, nudge that seizure risk up a bit.

I want to be honest about the evidence here. This concern comes from animal lab research, not human studies, so it's largely theoretical. Still, mexiletine is a drug we keep a close eye on, and rauwolscine can also raise heart rate and blood pressure, which isn't ideal for someone with a heart rhythm problem. Please run this combo by your doctor or pharmacist before mixing them.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear mexiletine out of your system. Rauwolscine is a close cousin of yohimbine, and in lab (test tube) studies, yohimbine slows down that same enzyme. If rauwolscine does the same in people, mexiletine could break down more slowly and build up to higher levels in your blood.

Mexiletine is an active drug, not a prodrug, so higher levels generally mean stronger effects and more side effects, things like nausea, dizziness, tremor, or in some cases worsening heart rhythm problems. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on lab data, not real patient reports. Still, since mexiletine is a heart-rhythm drug, please run this combination by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Rauwolscine (alpha-yohimbine) is a stimulant alkaloid closely related to yohimbine that is marketed mainly in fat-burning and pre-workout supplements. Human evidence for its benefits is very limited, and it can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause anxiety, so it should be used with caution and is not recommended for people with heart conditions, anxiety, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What Is Mexiletine Used For?

Brand name: Mexitil

Mexiletine Hydrochloride capsules are indicated for the treatment of documented, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias — for example, sustained ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers). Because mexiletine itself can trigger arrhythmias, it is not recommended for minor or symptom-free irregular heartbeats.

Treatment is started in a hospital setting so heart rhythm can be monitored closely. Antiarrhythmic drugs, including mexiletine, have not been shown to improve overall survival in patients with ventricular arrhythmias.
