In animal research, intraperitoneal rauwolscine lowered the seizure threshold level of the drug metrazol.

Here's the thing to know if you take Vigabatrin (Sabril) to control seizures. This medication works by calming down abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Rauwolscine, the stimulant found in many fat-burner and pre-workout products, pushes in the opposite direction. By revving up norepinephrine release, it may lower the brain's seizure threshold, which is the level at which a seizure can get triggered.

So the concern is that rauwolscine could partly work against what your vigabatrin is trying to do, possibly making a breakthrough seizure more likely. I'll be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on an animal study, not strong human data. Still, because seizure control matters so much, I'd run any pre-workout or stimulant supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first.

Rauwolscine (alpha-yohimbine) is a stimulant alkaloid closely related to yohimbine that is marketed mainly in fat-burning and pre-workout supplements. Human evidence for its benefits is very limited, and it can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause anxiety, so it should be used with caution and is not recommended for people with heart conditions, anxiety, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
