Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: in some animal studies, rehmannia seemed to lower blood sugar a bit. So if you're using something like IV glucose to raise a low blood sugar, the worry is that rehmannia could work against that goal and make it harder to bring your numbers back up to where they should be.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work, not strong human studies. For most people getting glucose in a medical setting, the team is watching your sugar closely and can adjust as needed. Still, it's worth mentioning any supplements like rehmannia to your pharmacist or doctor so they have the full picture.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glucose page

“Glucose given by IV raises a dangerously low blood sugar, and this list warrants real caution because most of its 256 ingredients pull the other way. Nearly all of them lower blood sugar on their own, working against the treatment and setting up another crash.”

About Rehmannia

What is Rehmannia?

  • Kidney and adrenal support
  • Anemia and blood building (traditional)
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Allergies
  • Fatigue and aging-related complaints

Rehmannia is a root used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, often to 'tonify' the kidneys and support energy or blood health. Human evidence for most modern uses is limited, so it should be viewed as unproven rather than reliable. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take other medicines.
