Reishi Mushroom and Trimethaphan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Trimethaphan

Trimethaphan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Reishi Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use of reishi mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Reishi mushroom has shown hypotensive activity in animal research. Clinical evidence suggests that reishi mushroom reduces blood pressure in some, but not all, patients with hypertension.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Trimethaphan is a powerful blood-pressure-lowering medicine given through an IV, usually in a hospital setting to bring down very high pressure quickly. Reishi mushroom can also gently nudge blood pressure downward in some people. So the worry is that stacking them together could drop your blood pressure too far.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, weak, or faint, especially when standing up. I'll be honest, though: this concern comes mostly from animal and lab studies, so the real-world risk is theoretical. Since trimethaphan is given in a closely watched hospital setting, your care team controls your blood pressure carefully. Still, let them know about any reishi you take so they can keep an eye out.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Trimethaphan page

“Trimethaphan (Arfonad) is given by IV to drop blood pressure quickly, often during surgery or a hypertensive emergency, so I would read this list with real vigilance rather than a shrug. Of the 136 flagged ingredients, nearly all act on blood pressure itself, some adding to the drug's lowering effect and others, tyramine being the clea…”

About Reishi Mushroom

What is Reishi Mushroom?

Reishi Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Fatigue and general well-being
  • Stress and sleep
  • Inflammation
  • Heart and cholesterol health

Reishi is a traditional Asian mushroom widely used to support the immune system and overall wellness. Human evidence for most of its claimed benefits is limited or low-quality, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or take other medicines.
