Teniposide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C19 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP2C19 enzyme activity.

Your child's leukemia is being treated with teniposide, and the body uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to help break this medicine down. Rooibos may slow that enzyme, at least in lab studies. If clearance slows, more teniposide could linger in the body, which in theory could mean stronger effects and a higher chance of its usual side effects, like a low white blood cell count (raising infection risk), low platelets, mouth sores, nausea, or fatigue.

Here's the honest part: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's far from proven. A cup of rooibos tea is very different from a concentrated extract. Still, since chemo is serious business, please run any rooibos tea or supplement past your child's oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Teniposide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Vumon

  • Teniposide is used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) in children that has not improved or that has worsened after treatment with other medications. Teniposide is in a class of medications known as podophyllotoxin derivatives. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in your body.
