Here's the simple version: in a test tube, rooibos slowed down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. The thinking is that if it slows this enzyme in people too, certain medicines cleared by it could hang around a little longer and feel a bit stronger. With a combo product like NyQuil, the ingredient most tied to this pathway is the dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant), so in theory you might notice a touch more drowsiness or grogginess.

The reassuring part: this is only laboratory evidence, not something shown in real people, and ordinary cups of rooibos tea are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts are a different story. If you're already feeling extra sleepy on NyQuil, that's mostly the doxylamine doing its job. Still, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing strong rooibos supplements with it.

One ingredient in NyQuil, the cough suppressant dextromethorphan, is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab studies (test tube only) hint that rooibos might slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in real life, dextromethorphan could build up slightly and lead to more of its usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy. The other ingredients (acetaminophen, doxylamine, pseudoephedrine) aren't really driven by this enzyme.

Here's my honest take: this is theoretical and based only on early lab work, not on people. A normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. If you're using concentrated rooibos extracts, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

If that happened in your body, dextromethorphan could linger a bit longer, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy feeling.

Now the reassuring part: this is only lab-dish evidence, not something seen in real people, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. The concern, if any, would be with concentrated extracts. NyQuil already makes most folks sleepy on its own, so just don't be surprised by that. If you regularly use rooibos supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
