Teniposide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabidiol (cbd) interacts with.

Cannabidiol may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
Research shows that cannabidiol inhibits CYP2C19. In clinical studies and case reports, cannabidiol use resulted in significant increases in the serum levels of topiramate, methadone, citalopram, omeprazole, and N-desmethylclobazam, the primary active metabolite of clobazam. These chemicals are metabolized by CYP2C19. Concomitant use of cannabidiol with CYP2C19 substrates may increase the risk for adverse effects from these substrates.

Here's the gist for teniposide: your body partly clears this chemo drug using a liver enzyme called CYP2C19. CBD can put the brakes on that enzyme. So if you used CBD alongside teniposide, the drug could clear more slowly and build up to higher levels than intended.

With a chemo medicine, that matters. Higher teniposide levels can mean more of its known side effects, like a bigger drop in blood counts (raising infection and bleeding risk), mouth sores, nausea, and feeling wiped out. The CYP2C19 inhibition itself is well documented, but I haven't seen this studied directly with teniposide, so the exact size of the effect isn't certain. Since this drug is dosed very carefully, please don't add CBD without first running it by your oncology team or pharmacist.

What Is Teniposide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Vumon

  • Teniposide is used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) in children that has not improved or that has worsened after treatment with other medications. Teniposide is in a class of medications known as podophyllotoxin derivatives. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in your body.
