Lesinurad falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Theoretically, schisandra might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro and animal research suggests that schisandra induces CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version for Lesinurad (Zurampic): your body clears it partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab and animal studies hint that Schisandra may speed up that enzyme, which could lower lesinurad levels and make it work a little less. Since lesinurad's whole job is helping your kidneys flush out uric acid, weaker activity might mean your uric acid creeps back up and gout flares become more likely.

I want to be honest though, this is only a theory from test-tube and animal research. It hasn't actually been seen in people, so I wouldn't panic. Still, if you're considering Schisandra, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your uric acid numbers.

What Is Lesinurad Used For?

Brand name: Zurampic

  • Lesinurad is used in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor to treat hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid) in people with gout (sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints) whose disease is not controlled with their current medication. Lesinurad is in a class of medications called selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors. It works by helping the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body.
