Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Theoretically, schisandra might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro and animal research suggests that schisandra induces CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Schisandra and Valsartan (Diovan). Valsartan is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab and animal studies hint that Schisandra may speed up that enzyme, which in theory could clear valsartan a little faster and make it slightly less effective. Valsartan is an active drug, not a prodrug, so faster breakdown means weaker effect, not stronger.

In plain terms, your blood pressure could creep up or your heart failure control could slip a bit. But honestly, this is theoretical only, never actually shown in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you want to try Schisandra, just keep an eye on your blood pressure readings and run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and to lower the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have reduced heart function. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (generic) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
