Here's the gist with slippery elm and your cough medicine. Slippery elm forms a slick, gel-like coating in your stomach and gut. The thinking is that this coating could act like a barrier and slow down how much dextromethorphan your body soaks up. If less gets absorbed, your cough suppressant might feel a bit weaker than usual.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical, based on how the fiber behaves rather than real-world reports. It's also a mild, easy-to-manage concern. A simple fix is spacing them out, taking your dextromethorphan a couple of hours apart from the slippery elm. If you're unsure or your cough isn't easing up, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
