St. John's wort decreases the levels and clinical effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.
St. John's wort induces P-glycoprotein. P-glycoprotein is a carrier mechanism responsible for transporting drugs and other substances across cell membranes. When P-glycoprotein is induced in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, it can prevent the absorption of some medications. In addition, induction of p-glycoprotein can decrease entry of drugs into the central nervous system (CNS) and decrease access to other sites of action.

Here's some good news if you're using betamethasone dipropionate (Sernivo) as a cream, lotion, or ointment on your skin. The interaction on file talks about St. John's wort speeding up a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which can lower the amount of certain medicines your body absorbs. But that mainly matters for pills and capsules you swallow. When you apply betamethasone to your skin, it works right there on the rash or irritated area, so this whole-body absorption issue is much less of a concern.

So in real life, your St. John's wort isn't likely to weaken how well your steroid cream calms itching, redness, or scaling. Still, since St. John's wort interacts with many medicines, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor to be safe, especially if you ever take a steroid by mouth.

What Is Betamethasone Topical Used For?

Brand name: Sernivo

Betamethasone topical is used to relieve the redness, swelling, and itching of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses (skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment). Sernivo Spray is specifically approved for plaque psoriasis of the body. Diprolene (topical cream, ointment, or gel) is indicated for inflammatory and itchy skin conditions in patients 13 years of age and older.

This medication is for use on the skin only. It is not approved for use on the face, groin, or underarms, and it is not for use in the eyes, mouth, or vagina.
