Why this applies to Almotriptan

Almotriptan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear almotriptan (Axert). Sweet Annie may bump into that same enzyme, but honestly the picture is murky. In lab dish studies, one part of the plant (artemisinin) seemed to speed up CYP3A4, while the whole extract seemed to slow it down. So we can't say for sure which way it would push your migraine medicine.

If it ended up slowing clearance, almotriptan could build up a bit and you might notice more dizziness, drowsiness, flushing, or tightness in the chest or jaw. If it sped things up, your migraine relief could feel weaker. This is only test-tube evidence, not real people, so I wouldn't panic. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
