Why this applies to Flutamide

Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the short version for anyone taking Flutamide for prostate cancer. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to process this medicine, and Sweet Annie may tug on that same enzyme. The tricky part is that the lab data points in both directions: one constituent (artemisinin) appeared to speed CYP3A4 up, while the whole-plant extract seemed to slow it down. So we honestly can't say for sure which way it would push your Flutamide levels.

Because this is only test-tube research, not human studies, I wouldn't panic. But since the direction is uncertain, it could in theory weaken Flutamide's cancer-fighting effect or, the other way, raise the risk of side effects like liver irritation, diarrhea, or hot flashes. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
