Why this applies to Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with Sweet Annie and your mirtazapine (Remeron). Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break mirtazapine down, and Sweet Annie may nudge that enzyme one way or the other. The tricky part is that the lab studies pull in opposite directions: one constituent (artemisinin) seems to speed the enzyme up, while the whole-plant extract seems to slow it down. So we honestly can't say which way it tips in a real person.

If it sped things up, your mirtazapine could clear faster and feel less effective. If it slowed things down, you might notice more of its usual effects like drowsiness, increased appetite, or grogginess. This is only based on test-tube data, so the real risk is uncertain. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your dose on your own.

What Is Mirtazapine Used For?

Brand name: Remeron

Mirtazapine tablets, mirtazapine orally disintegrating tablets, Remeron, and RemeronsолTab are all indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. Major depressive disorder involves a persistently low or sad mood most days, often accompanied by loss of interest, sleep changes, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

The effectiveness of mirtazapine tablets in maintaining a response for up to 40 weeks after an initial treatment period has also been demonstrated. Patients should be reassessed periodically to determine whether continued treatment is needed.
