Why this applies to Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymes in vitro. Theoretically, 1,3-DMAA can increase levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist for mirtazapine (Remeron). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 as one of the ways it clears this drug. In lab studies, 1,3-DMAA appears to block that enzyme. In theory, if that enzyme is slowed down, more mirtazapine could linger in your body, which may bump up its usual effects like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, increased appetite, and weight gain.

Honestly, though, the bigger worry here isn't the enzyme math. 1,3-DMAA is a banned, amphetamine-like stimulant that raises blood pressure and strains the heart, and stacking that on any antidepressant is a bad combination. This interaction is only based on test-tube data, so it's theoretical, but DMAA itself is genuinely unsafe. Please skip it and check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Mirtazapine Used For?

Mirtazapine tablets, mirtazapine orally disintegrating tablets, Remeron, and RemeronsолTab are all indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. Major depressive disorder involves a persistently low or sad mood most days, often accompanied by loss of interest, sleep changes, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

The effectiveness of mirtazapine tablets in maintaining a response for up to 40 weeks after an initial treatment period has also been demonstrated. Patients should be reassessed periodically to determine whether continued treatment is needed.
