Why this applies to Interferon Beta-1a

Interferon Beta-1a falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the gist: both your MS injection (Interferon Beta-1a, brand names Rebif and Avonex) and sweet clover can each put a little strain on your liver. Interferon beta is well known for sometimes nudging up liver enzymes (the AST and ALT your doctor checks on bloodwork). Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in larger supplement amounts has also been linked to liver irritation. Stack them together and the worry is that the two effects could add up.

This is mostly a theoretical concern, but there is one real case where someone on sweet clover and interferon saw their liver numbers jump sharply, then settle once both were stopped. So I wouldn't panic, but I'd definitely loop in your pharmacist or neurologist before combining them. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness.

What Is Interferon Beta-1a Intramuscular Injection Used For?

Brand names: Rebif, Avonex

  • Interferon beta-1a intramuscular injection is used to treat adults with various forms of multiple sclerosis (MS; a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and people may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination, and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control) including:

    • clinically isolated syndrome (CIS; nerve symptom episodes that last at least 24 hours),

    • relapsing-remitting forms (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time), or

    • secondary progressive forms (course of disease where relapses occur more often).

  • Interferon beta-1a is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It works by decreasing inflammation and preventing nerve damage that may cause symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
