Why this applies to Maraviroc

Maraviroc falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the thing to know about maraviroc: it can occasionally stress the liver on its own. In fact, the label even warns to watch for signs of liver trouble while taking it. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in larger supplement amounts has also been linked to mild, usually reversible liver irritation. So the worry here is simple addition: two things that can each nudge your liver enzymes up, used together.

I want to be straight with you, though. This is a theoretical concern based on how these products behave, not on solid studies pairing them. Still, watch for clues like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, nausea, or unusual tiredness. Please check with your pharmacist or HIV doctor before combining them, since your maraviroc is doing important work and isn't something to risk.

About Maraviroc

What Is Maraviroc Used For?

Brand names: Celsentri, Selzentry

Maraviroc treats a specific type of HIV-1 infection called CCR5-tropic HIV-1. It is always used alongside other antiretroviral (anti-HIV) medicines — never alone. A special test called a tropism assay must be done before starting treatment to confirm you have the right type of HIV.

Selzentry (the brand-name oral solution and tablet) is approved for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 2 kg. Generic maraviroc tablets are approved for adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older weighing at least 10 kg. Neither form is recommended for patients whose HIV is classified as dual/mixed-tropic or CXCR4-tropic.
