Why this applies to Mipomersen Sodium

Mipomersen Sodium falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Kynamro (mipomersen): it already carries a known risk of stressing your liver. It can raise liver enzymes and cause fat to build up in the liver, which is why doctors check liver bloodwork before and during treatment. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in larger or spoiled supplement amounts has occasionally been linked to liver irritation too.

So the worry is simply additive. Stacking a liver-stressing supplement on top of a drug that's already hard on the liver could, in theory, raise your chances of liver trouble (think fatigue, nausea, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes). To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not proven head-to-head data. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Mipomersen Injection

What Is Mipomersen Injection Used For?

Brand name: Kynamro

  • Mipomersen injection is used to decrease levels of cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood in people who have homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH; a rare inherited condition that causes very high levels of cholesterol in the blood, increasing the risk of serious heart disease). Some people with HoFH may be treated with LDL apheresis (a procedure that removes LDL from the blood), but mipomersen injection should not be used along with this treatment. Mipomersen injection should not be used to decrease cholesterol levels in people who do not have HoFH. Mipomersen injection is in a class of medications called antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) inhibitors. It works by preventing certain fatty substances from forming in the body.
