Why this applies to Terbinafine

Terbinafine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the concern with pairing sweet clover and terbinafine (Lamisil). Terbinafine, especially the tablets used for nail fungus, is processed by your liver and is already known to occasionally raise liver enzymes or, rarely, cause real liver trouble. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in larger or spoiled doses can also stress the liver. Stacking two things that lean on the liver may slightly raise the odds of liver irritation.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not a proven, common problem, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, or belly pain, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Terbinafine

What Is Terbinafine Used For?

Brand name: Lamisil

Terbinafine tablets are used to treat onychomycosis — a fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails caused by dermatophytes (a type of fungus). Before starting the tablets, a doctor will confirm the diagnosis with a nail test.

Topical terbinafine products — creams and sprays — treat athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm (tinea corporis) on the skin. They also relieve the itching, burning, cracking, and scaling that come with these infections. Lamisil AT Spray is indicated for athlete's foot between the toes specifically; its effectiveness on the bottom or sides of the foot is unknown.
