Why this applies to Umbralisib Tosylate

Umbralisib Tosylate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the thing to know about Ukoniq (umbralisib): it can be tough on the liver all on its own. The label actually warns about elevated liver enzymes, so your oncology team already watches your blood work closely while you're on it. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in larger supplement amounts has been linked to mild liver irritation in some people.

So the concern here is simple addition: two things that can stress the liver at the same time. This is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than proven cases with this exact drug, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with a cancer medicine this important, I'd skip the sweet clover and check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any new supplement.

What Is Umbralisib Used For?

Brand name: Ukoniq

  • Umbralisib is used to treat marginal zone lymphoma (MZL; a slow growing cancer that begins in a type of white blood cells that normally fight infection) in adults whose cancer has returned or did not respond to a certain type of medication. It is also used to treat follicular lymphoma (FL; a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells) in adults whose cancer has returned or did not respond to at least three other medications. Umbralisib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop the spread of cancer cells.
